Previous Workshops:
The Fall 2001 workshop of ETSAP, at the same time the last one under this current Annex VII, was held
in Paris, hosted by the IEA. Due to the cancellation of the meeting at the planned venue, Beijing, China,
the meeting had to be rescheduled at very short notice and the IEA location in Paris was a very
convenient alternative. ETSAP also celebrated its 25 anniversary at this occasion.
The emphasis of this meeting lay on the Energy Technology Perspectives, ETP, a major modeling
undertaking lead and sponsored by the IEA. The ambitious goal of this project involves many of
ETSAP’s partners and draws heavily upon gained experience and recent developments in our
community. There are implications on the modeling side with the development and application of a multi
region global TIMES learning model and on the modeler’s side for database set up, review and
improvement. The steps and tasks in the process are now well defined and the project can enter its
realisation and be finalised as foreseen by September 2002.
During the - shortened - regular ETSAP meeting, we received insights in various models and their
results, like the WEO model of the IEA, the German Times application and the Belgian MACGem
experience. IRG, GERAD and ABARE in turn presented updates on the software front. Taking into
account the opportunity of being at the IEA, there was an interesting session on insights and updates
on activities, relevant for ETSAP, in IEA non-member countries. Also the discussions during and after
these presentations clarified much and were aimed at exploring how to involve developing countries as
potential future ETSAP members.
Plans for future work, both the finalisation of the current Annex VII, with a summary report to be
published by the end of this year, and the plans for the next Annex VIII were discussed at several
occasions and endorsed.
This meeting was also the last one for Tom Kram, for 12 years he has fulfilled the task of project head
with lots of commitment and dedication and to everyone’s satisfaction. His new job at RIVM will allow
him to remain in contact with the ETSAP community.
The Executive Committee meeting closed the official end of the workshop, and inter alia further
discussed the items brought up during the workshop and also dealt with the succession of the
Operating Agent for the next Annex. Being not in number however, the Executive Committee could not
take any decision and the matters discussed are referred to a written procedure at a later stage.
